Today we had fun with friction. We went out into the hall in our socks in search of the smoothest floors of Dogwood. Check out these great sliders.

This month we have been learning about force and motion. We have learned about push, pull, gravity and friction. Check out our movie! I have been asked to review some new learning resources for use in our school district. I will be away from Dogwwod this Thursday as I will be at the District Education Centre all day. The class will be taught by a TOC.
This term in math we are continuing to develop our number sense. The focus this month is on breaking numbers apart and putting them back together (part/part/whole). For the children, this means understanding that, for example, 6 can be broken into 1 and 5, 4 and 2, 3 and 3, etc. We have done large group, small group, partner and individual work in this area. Some of our school games could be easily replicated at home. Simply decide on the number (4-12) you would like your child to practice and pull out that many small objects you may have around the house (lego pieces, pennies, raisins, miniature marshmallows, Barbie shoes, etc.). Shake the objects in your hand then secretly separate them so that some are in each hand. Keep one hand closed and reveal the other hand to your child. Have them count and name the number of objects they see in your open hand then "guess" how many are hidden in your closed hand. This could be followed by writing an addition or subtraction equation using those numbers. Here are some photos of the children working on some of these games. Division 12 January 2014 Up-Date Dear Parents: Happy New Year! I hope you all enjoyed your Christmas holiday and are glad to be back at school. We are now beginning our study of winter which will include the properties of matter (freeze/thaw) as well as force and motion. We will also look at how animals survive in winter. During our Read/Write Cycle, the children are now working in a draft notebook where they write several sentences on a topic. Once they have had their work proofread by an adult, they can choose to publish their work using an old manual typewriter, an Alphasmart or the computer. Next month, I will introduce two more publishing options; the Smartboard and the iPad. I hope to post some of their writing on our class blog. At this time, I am in need of additional parent volunteers to assist with proofreading, supervising children typing and helping with the printer. If you are interested in helping on Tuesdays, Wednesdays or Thursdays for about 40 minutes in the morning, please let me know. |
