I found a wonderful website filled with excellent photos and videos of animals. Once you get to the website, simply type the name of the animal you are looking for in the search bar to see photos and videos.
Today in science we talked about how the animals of B.C.'s desert survive in the heat. We learned that coyotes choose to hunt in the cool of night and burrowing owls make their homes in the cool underground. We watched this clip of burrowing owls in the desert.
Today in math we learned to collect data to help answer a question. We started by answering the teacher’s question on the Smartboard, “Do you like sushi?” Each child had a turn to come up and put a check mark under yes or no for their answer. Then we brainstormed other questions we would like answered. The children recorded their own question on their paper then went and asked other children their question. Then we counted and recorded how many yes and no responses they received.
At this month's superpower assembly today we learned about a growth mindset of what we can't do yet. We learned that if we keep trying and never give up, we can do anything. We watched this very cute video about Ormie the Pig who never gives up.
Happy New Year! I hope you all enjoyed your Christmas holiday and are glad to be back at school. We are now beginning our theme of animals of B.C. and how they adapt to their environment. If your child has any books or toys related to the theme at home, we would love to borrow them at school for this month. At this time of year, I like to change the Home Reading assignment. Beginning this week, the children are expected to read the book they brought home, draw and colour a picture about the book (including scenery and using at least 5 colours), copy the title of the book and write a sentence about the book. Allow them to spell words for themselves for the sentence by printing the letters for the sounds they hear. Perfect spelling is not required. During our Read/Write Cycle, all children are now working in a draft notebook where they write several sentences on a topic. Once they have had their work proofread by an adult, they can choose to publish their work using an old manual typewriter, an Alphasmart, computer, the Smartboard or the iPad. I will post their iPad stories on our class blog. At this time, I am in need of additional parent volunteers to assist with proofreading, supervising children typing and helping with the printer. If you are interested in helping on Mondays for about 60 minutes, please let me know. Remember to continue checking our class website and blog as I post new things every day. Also, please feel free to add comments to our blog. The children enjoy reading and responding to them.
Welcome back to school. I hope you enjoyed your winter break. The children were filled with happy stories to tell this morning. In math we made a graph about our shoes. Here is the result.
