Today we found out that whales are really big. The orca is 9 metres long, the gray whale is 14 metres long and the blue whale is 26 metres long. We took the giant measuring tape and some masking tape out to the hallway. We measured each of those whales and placed a strip of tape on the floor for each one. Then we laid the kids head to foot along the tape to see how many kids would equal each whale. It took 22 kids to make one blue whale!

We have started our math unit on measurement. Today we worked on the concept of longer and shorter. The children searched the classroom to find one object that was longer than their pencil and one object that was shorter than their pencil. Then they placed their objects in the sorting circles. Here’s what they found.
This month’s school-wide superpower is the Power of Yet. Today we talked about things we cannot do “yet” and how we could get better at those things. Here are some of their ideas.
Division 16 News
Happy New Year! I hope you all enjoyed your Christmas holiday and are glad to be back at school. We are now beginning our theme of animals of B.C. and how they adapt to their environment. If your child has any books or toys related to the theme at home, we would love to borrow them at school for this month. At this time of year, I like to change the Home Reading assignment. Beginning this week, grade one children are expected to read the book they brought home, draw and colour a picture about the book (including scenery and using at least 5 colours), copy the title of the book and write a sentence about the book. Allow them to spell words for themselves for the sentence by printing the letters for the sounds they hear. Perfect spelling is not required. This extra writing is optional for kindergarten children. During our Read/Write Cycle, all children have been given a draft notebook where they write several sentences on a topic. Once they have had their work proofread by an adult, they can choose to publish their work using an old manual typewriter, an Alphasmart, computer, the Smartboard or the iPad. I will post their iPad stories on our class blog. Remember to continue checking our class website and blog as I post new things every day. Also, please feel free to add comments to our blog. The children enjoy reading and responding to them. Our Leadership Team has a special day planned for us on Friday, January 11 called Hawaii/Beach Day. Children are asked to wear their Hawaiian or Beach Clothing to school on Friday. Lorrie Watt |
