Today in science we talked about the changes we’ve noticed in our maple tree outside the classroom. We noticed snow on the ground , moss on the branches and no leaves left. See your child’s FreshGrade portfolio to see their work.

Today our big buddies helped us record something we can’t do yet and helped us think of what we could do to learn it. Then we posted it to FreshGrade.
Enjoy the snow day. Listen to CKNW am 980 to see if schools are open tomorrow.
Happy New Year! I hope you all enjoyed your Christmas holiday and are glad to be back at school. We are now beginning our theme of animals of B.C. and how they adapt to their environment. If your child has any books or toys related to the theme at home, we would love to borrow them at school for this month. At this time of year, I like to change the Home Reading assignment. Beginning this week, grade one children are expected to read the book they brought home, draw and colour a picture about the book (including scenery and using at least 5 colours), copy the title of the book and write a sentence about the book. Allow them to spell words for themselves for the sentence by printing the letters for the sounds they hear. Perfect spelling is not required. During our Read/Write Cycle, all children have been given a draft notebook where they write several sentences on a topic. Once they have had their work proofread by an adult, they can choose to publish their work using an old manual typewriter, an Alphasmart, computer, the Smartboard or the iPad. I will post their iPad stories on our class blog. Remember to continue checking our class website and blog as I post new things every day. Also, please feel free to add comments to our blog. The children enjoy reading and responding to them.
Our Leadership Team has a special day planned for us on Thursday, January 9 called Throwback Thursday. Children are asked to dress in a style of an era gone by…….disco, hippie, etc.
Today we started our new theme of perseverance. We talked about how challenging it is to learn new things and to never give up. We watched this cute clip of Ormie the Pig who never gives up trying to get a cookie.
