Today in math we played a game with our pockets. First the children put one unifix cube in each pocket of their clothing. Then at their tables they combined all their cubes and counted to see if they had enough to make a stick of ten. Then they brought their sticks and leftovers to the circle and we had enough leftovers to make some more tens. Today our class total of pockets was 52. We are going to play the game again tomorrow and we are hoping for more than 52 pockets. Please help your child choose clothing for tomorrow with lots of pockets! In math this week we have been measuring our body length with unifix cubes, then breaking the cubes into sticks of ten to help with the counting. It took fewer cubes to make Felix than it did to make Mrs. Watt. Thanks to Kenzie for taking the funny picture of the teacher on the floor!
Today we had a visit from the school district Aboriginal Worker. He talked to the children about how the Coast Salish people lived over 1000 years ago. He talked about what activities they would have been involved in for all of the four seasons as well as describing how they have relied on the many animals found in our region. He brought his deerskin drum and everyone had a turn to hold it and play it. We all sang a song together honouring the wolf. The children especially enjoyed the howling part.
