Today in science we had a lesson about how we get night and day and the seasons. We darkened the room and used a flashlight and a globe. I was very impressed that some children already knew that it takes 24 hours for the earth to spin and that it takes 1 year to go all the way around the sun. Here is a short video clip we watched to help us remember about the sun.

Today at Dogwood we recognized the Canadian Armed Forces and their contributions to all the rights and freedoms enjoyed by all Canadians. I was especially proud of the excellent behaviour of the students as we were expected to remain quiet the entire time with no clapping. Today we were getting ready for our Remembrance Day assembly. We talked about peace and how we can all get along at school. Four children (Janice, Julianna, Cedric and Alex) were selected to decorate our peace dove. Marcus and Marissa were chosen to carry our class wreath to the front cenotaph at the assembly and Landon and Sara were chosen to carry the peace dove to the front and stick it to the wall at the assembly. Today we held our first ever Identity Day at Dogwood. Each child brought something from home to symbolize something they are passionate about. Just before lunch, some parents visited our classroom to see the items and listen to children tell about their passion. After lunch we visited 5 other classes in the school to see and hear about the passions of others. Then we came back to our class and hosted visitors from many other classes. I was very proud of the way the children conducted themselves during this process. They showed genuine interest in the work of others and were able to tell about their own passion.
Today at journal time, the room was especially peaceful. I always play instrumental music while the children draw, write and colour in their journals. Today the children were so focussed, I wanted parents to see it.
Remember we are having our first ever Dogwood Identity Day tomorrow. If your child forgot their items for today's rehearsal, make sure to send them tomorrow so they will be able to participate. Also, Cards By Me orders and field trip forms are due tomorrow. Parents, remember to help your child choose what to bring tomorrow for Identity Day on Friday. Help them practice what they are going to say about their "passion" as we will have a rehearsal on Thursday in preparation for Friday. Thanks. Today we had a lesson about feelings and showing kindness to others. I read the book, "Have You Filled A Bucket Today?" which is a lovely book describing how kids can help fill the "feelings bucket" of others by saying kind things and including others in their play. Then we copied the sentence "I am a bucket filler" and did a picture of themselves showing kindness to a friend or family member. Some children even included a cartoon talking bubble. Today your child brought home our class newsletter for November. I also included some special dates in December so you can start thinking ahead. Today in science we talked about natural and artificial sources of light these were the suggestions from the children. I printed a copy of this screen for each child. At centres today, the log set was very popular. As October comes to a close, we are looking ahead to November. For this month, our science theme will be Light and Sound. This topic is new to the grade one curriculum so we are excited to get started on the new B.C. Curriculum. Remember to help your child count their completed pages in their Home Reading books and to let me know when they reach 25. Many students have already received their prize for completing 25 pages and are now working toward 50. Thanks for keeping the Halloween treats at home. Below are the highlights for the month of November. November 5 – Passion Items Remember to have your child select something from home to bring to school that reflects something they are passionate about. A notice about this was sent home last week.
