We have been working on addition and subtraction by breaking apart numbers through the use of a number of games. "Lift the Bowl" is where one partner hides some blocks under the can and puts the rest on top. The partner needs to determine how many are hiding by counting on. The "Hand Game" is where 8 small blocks are shaken in one partner's hand then split between their two hands. Only one hand is revealed and the partner needs to determine how many are hiding in the closed hand. Pictures and numbers are recorded on the paper. We have also used dice and playing cards to practice addition. A very popular game is "Two Card War" where each player flips two cards at a time, adds them together to determine which partner has the higher total. This is a great game to play at home. Just remove the face cards from a deck of cards.
